It is bolted in place on the earlier trucks, so yes that would seem to be a logical way to proceed. I did not have to do anything on my '85 when installing a 3" body lift. Might also see if the steering shaft up front is good and tight. Some u-joints and slip joints up there that could be loose as well. I took mine apart and cleaned/regreased the u-joints.
