Getting the Wheeling Fever

I finally got my hitch on and hooked up my ATV and trailer. I went for a ride to see how it rode and found that I had absolutely no power on inclines. It topped out at about 55 and when I got to any hills it would drop down to about 30. Any sugestions on how to make it up these hills?

Down shift. You have not much more than 100hp, and the truck probably is around 4000lbs plus a trailer.

Power and 2.6 do not mix <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif" alt="" /> How does your truck run without the trailer. Mine runs as good as I can get it, 80 plus if need be in the flats. As soon as I hit a big hill with it starts to bog. I'm running 31's. I can hold 55 on the very steep hills in third at 4000 rpm <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif" alt="" /> I have a mega class IV trailer hitch....I mean I have a mega class IV strap point <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/rolleyes.gif" alt="" />

I'm running 33's with a 2.6 and I can run uphills in 5th gear with a lot of extra weight. But to do it, I had to get my engine running in tip-top perfect shape and I had to put in 5.29 diff gears. Nonetheless, I still will bog down, forcing me to either slug it through or down-shift to 4th. Doing a turbo conversion or putting in a 4.3 Chevy is another way.
Short of any of these options, with 33's you're asking too much of your 4-banger.

You left out the word "carburetor" before "2.6"... Your choices are as stated above IF the carb secondary is opening, and it probably is or you wouldn't get 30 on the uphills, PLUS the following choices (a non all inclusive list): 1. Jato bottles on the back of the truck 2. a VERY large mass at the top of the hill so you can get a gravity boost 3. a "Tornado" turbulence thingy 4. NOx bottle I'd go turbo...

Would it help or hurt to drive it in 4H instead of 2H? And, what RPM should I be pulling at?

4H will kill your transfer case on pavement. There has to be some way for the front tires to slip from the back tires. Even if you have brand new tires of exact size it will still bind the transfer case.
There are 4x4's you can drive on pavement like my Land Cruiser because it has a transfer case that lets the front and rear tires slip. 4x4 on pavement wastes lots of gas.
