Need a Spot
I have a 95 YJ 4.0 - more recently when shifting from 2nd to third gear I sometimes hear and feel a grinding of some sort. I have the clutch fully pushed in and I checked under the hood and there is plenty of clutch fluid. It seems to happen more when I have it reved up in 2nd around 3000 rpm. It also only happens from 2nd to 3rd, never 3rd to 2nd or going between 3rd and 4th. I had an 89 YJ that did the same thing but it was less frequent so I really didn't think much of it. Any help would be much appreciated...thanks

Body Damage is Cool
The grinding is a synchronizer going bad most likely. You can try changing the oil in the tranny, at least check the level, if it's low adding some may help. The gears are always meshed and spinning so grinding gears is a misnomer. Unfortunately, the only way to fix a bad sychro is to completely tear down the tranny, Live with it or get ready for a big hit in the wallet. If adding oil or changing it doesn't help, you could just stop using third gear. <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/notooth.gif" alt="" />
