Why narrow them? I understand they need some attention but given you do the work yourself, I see it as being reasonably priced.

Did you narrow your D44? And can I get 4.634 gears for a D44? I have been reading everything I can get my hands on about the SAS. I have a company car now so it might be time to set the Montero up for serious trails.

No I did not need to narrow it because I picked it out of a vehicle that already had the diff on the correct side, and correct width in a STOCK CONFIGURATION.

And no you can't get 4.636, but you can get 4.56 which is close enough to work great. thats what I run.

You can get D44's out of tons of vehicles. You have to pick the right one. IF you are going to go D60, it is unlikely that you will be able to find one in the correct width for as small a truck as a gen1, or 2. MOST 60's came in 1 ton rigs. 3500's F350's and the like. POSSIBLY you can find one in something like a push cart at an aitport or something.

Narrowing an axle set would toss in at least $1000 each.

How much wider is a full width axle than a 1'st gen? I don't have one arround here to measure. I can get full width axles a lot easier than narrow ones, but I don't want to have to cut my bath tub in half to make flares. I'm having trouble finding a waggy axle arround here. Yotas are easier to find but full width everywhere.

You will be doing this.

Full width is crazy wide. If you do full width, plan on 44 inch tires or larger, and massive lift to make it look right.

Yes. But 5.29s are available for a D44 as well as the Mitsu rear end. Talked to a buddy of mine and I can get a 4.3 for super cheap as well as the tranny and t-case so I may be going that route this summer.

Are you sure about 5.29's? Reider Racing lists only 5.13 or 5.38 for a D44. When I looked at it before, only a Ford 9" (which would be custom for a front end) had 5.29's available.

Looks like I get lucky. I just found a Dana44 HP with 4.27s and its the later Dana 44 so it has the 30 spline axles with disc brakes and warn hubs. Hoping to pick it up next week

Well its off a 76 bronco so its around 58" and it will be a drivers side drop just like yours. If I do end up picking this up I still don't know if I am going to put it in my gen2.5. Just as of today I have started my search for a 2door Montero/Raider. I found one I need to go and look at for $350 shot engine.

Sounds like that will work great. IF it is 5 lug, you can put wagoneer knuckles on it to get an easy 6 lug conversion.
