This is kind of a follow up to my other post about the misfire when cold and damp. But it looks like my 88 4Runner might still have the original plug wires on it with 150K miles! I'm getting a sparke jumping across wires(or your hand it you get too close) when it's cold and damp. I was planning on getting new Toyota wires but has anyone used another brand and been real happy with them? The NGK wires keep popping up in searches.

Yea, Factory. I went with a set of after market "lifetime" wires for my 94 V6 and 2 of them were too short right outta the box.

OEM is still the best. My originals lasted 17 years.

What ever wire you can find with the lowest resistance. MSD's are the lowest have measured but they are $$$. Bosch mag-core's come in near the top of the heap and the price is reasonable. OE wires are great if your only concern is AM radio reception. Don't judge wires based on price. Take an OHM meter and once you get lowest resistance then you can move on to build quality and warranty. OEM wires do fit the nicest but fall far short of any performance standard and they are a perishable item in that they use a fiberglass core coated with carbon as a conductor. all of the spiral wound wires (MSD,Taylor,Bosh,etc...) use a metallic spiral and are not considered perishable meaning that they do not wear out electrically with age as the others do by burning the carbon off the fiberglass. Everyone will preach OE but how many other parts on their Trucks have been replaced with other than OE parts for performance reasons? Plug wires are no different.

Well, I just got done changing the plugs. They've been in since 1998 and they were real stubborn to get out. They were some Autolite platinum plugs that I couldn't cross reference so I don't know if they were the right plugs or not. But the gaps were very large so I'm thinking on the cool, damp days there was too much resistance trying to jump that gap on the #5 cylinder and that caused it to jump spark across the wires and my hand. I fired it up and it's incredibly smooth with the new plugs. So I'll leave the wires on for now to see if the misfire is gone. I still can't believe this engine passed emission's so easily and the dist cap was all rusty on the terminals, old plugs with huge gaps(that might have helped) and the original catalytic converter with 150K miles.
