Getting the Wheeling Fever
Hello guys,

I've been gone for awhile. Here is a question for you.

Are the front and rear diffs(and housings) the same for both pre 95 trucks and Tacomas. I'm thinking about buying a Taco and would like to transfer some parts from my 89 22re truck. Any help would be appreciative. Also what gear ratio would you recommend for 32" tires 4.10 or 4.56

Thanks

Donnie

The Tacoma TRD elocker differential is the same size as the pre-Tacoma rear diff - the common 8" diff. The non-TRD Tacoma rear diff is 8.4", no real compatibility with the pre-Taco trucks.

On the front, I'm not entirely sure. Pre-Taco and Taco both have a 7.5" front diff, but it was redesigned for the Tacoma. I *assume* the carriers are different, which is what matters. Perhaps someone who's opened them up can elaborate?

4.56 with 32's is excellent onroad and offroad.

The Taco 7.5 (front) is different than the earlier gen truck (at least the one in my 4Runner was...) Reverse rotation gears and bigger pinion and carrier bearings as I recall.

EDIT: 4.56 sounds great. The 4.88's in the 4Runner were a bit much with 33's on-road, perfect off road. I didn't feel so bad when a driver used to a crawl box stalled my 4Runner on a small ledge...

Thanks for the help guys,

I live in Guatemala and finding technical info. here is a problem. I serve as a missionary and do a lot of off-road driving to the mountain villages where I work.

I want to trade up from my pooped out 89 into a 96-00 Tacoma or maybe a diesel driven Hilux. So i'm getting some info together.

Thanks
God Bless <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" />
