greetings! i am new to the forum. anyways heres my ? i have the opportunity to buy a 1989 isuzu trooper, four door, four banger, four wheel drive, standard from my auto shop class. we replaced the head gasket and the radiator. it has 122000 miles on it and the outside is suprizingly good as well as the inside. both are pretty much immaculate. i can get it for 1200 bux from my teacher and it runs and stuff we just fix cars and sell em for cheap. so this would be my first four wheel drive, i have a nissan truck now and want a four wheel drive to wheel harder than the nissan and thought you guys would have a good opinion. should i buy?

In an Isuzu forum, your not likely to get an unbiased opinion, and all here will more than likely say "go for it." Just like in a jeep forum you'll get the same as when someone asks if they should buy a wrangler, or in a toyota with an fj40.

But since I'm a range of 3 makes Ill do what I can

Pro's

New head--biggest failure with the 2.6
longer wheelbase
Good solid 4x4 system
Originality
slew of others, but I've never had a trooper....yet.
perfect for a 3.4 swap
good aftermarket, small, but competent , I cant spell
Cons
2.6,peppy but small, watch the temp gauge like a hawk
IFS....good for mild to moderate offroad, but without some serious beefing wont really do well \, especially with a locker
$1200 is too high in my opinion, but I live in the salt belt so my judgement is impaired.

Honestly I'd say go for it, beat it, break it, and fix it with beefier better parts.

It would be more perfect for the swap if it had the 2.8 V6...

Pretty much anyone can go out and find a Jeep / Chevy / Ford / Toyota / etc. to beat on, but it takes someone with real vision to do it with an Isuzuà (Yeah, OK... and maybe a wee-bit of insanity thrown in there for good measure )

Anyway, hereÆs one more thoroughly biased opinion: Go for it!

At the worst, youÆll be out 1200 bucks, and maybe can look at it as a learning experienceà
On the other hand, you might love it, and find out that you fit right in with the rest of the odd duck`wheelers around here

Six Isuzus, so far... still have three of them.

I wouldn't get it.

Sorry guys, I know this is a 'Zu board and all, but c'mon, the 4ZE1 is such a primitive engine...why bother if you have a choice?
Yeah, you can get all sentimental about it an put an AMC head and a Taurus fan and a Ford 3G alt, a cam, some headers, etc.
But, you'll still be seeing nothing but the of any 2G Trooper on the freeway. Of course, the 1G Troops do look better. hmmm...maybe it is worth having that engine...

I think the price is too high, tell them you'll give them 1000 cash.

Jay

Don't use the prices listed in my sig as a guideline for pricing, I frequent the state patrol auctions...

1989 Trooper 2.8 V6 5-Speed(the daily driver)- Superwinch Hubs, otherwise Stock - $350
1990 Trooper LS 2.8 V6 Auto - Superwinch Hubs, otherwise stock....for now - $182.50
1983 Chevy Blazer - Stock - $150
No Car Payments - PRICELESS
