If you're willing to pay $1200, then I'd take $1200 with you and offer $1000. If they take the $1000 offer, then you've saved yourself $200. If they don't take the offer, then you've got enough to pay for it anyways. I'd say it's worth $1200 to me, but it may not be worth $1200 to you or someone else. But with only 122,000 miles and it's got a new head, I'd say it's worth $1200. Just my .02 cents.

They're rare enough to be "cool", but common enough that new and used parts are reasonably priced. And there's a bigger aftermarket than, say, the Montero (which is also a cool truck).

Let's see...boxed frame, strong rear end, quality electrics..it's a true truck (even if it's not live axle), unlike just about anything you buy today. I can't stand those unibody cars that masquerade as trucks.

Now, I wouldn't pass up a Gelandewagen, but the Trooper is here to stay. I paid $1800 for mine, had about 150,000 on it. I don't feel like I got ripped off at all. Keep in mind that this was a Georgia truck that has little or no rust, good paint, minimal body damage, etc.

I've generally enjoyed owning my truck, and certainly have no plans to get rid of it. It has a lot more character than any new truck (but remember, I live in a house built in 1922, so I'm a bit weird like that <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif" alt="" /> ).

actually im not a fan of boxed frames, they gennerally rust out alot faster due to the muck getting trapped inside of them.

Arguments pro and con:

Con: Yeah, the 2.6 L motor is a bit anemic. Also, Kelly Blue Book values have never been kind to Isuzu, so any hope of resale value is unfounded. In other words, you are making a long term purchase here, one you would have to keep until dead as you have little hope of re-couping any of the money.

Pro: Where else are you going to find a good, solid, reliable vehicle for $1200, let alone a 4x4. If it has no rust anywhere, and you like the vehicle, and it runs well and has a good tranny, clutch, wheels, tires, brakes, etc., then you really can't go wrong, not at that price. The 2.6 liter motor, while being a bit down in power, is very reliable. My '93 Amigo had that motor, and it was fine for everything except towing my ski boat any further than the local launch. (although the Amigo is lighter than the Trooper). Bottom line is this: You like it, then buy it. If you harbor any doubts, then walk away.

Thats really a misconception(as least in my experince), I have a 1980 Chevy Luv(same platform as the 84-86 Troopers) that has the Isuzu signature boxed frame and so far i haven't had any problems with it rusting because of muck getting inside the frame, and that is after the truck spending most of it's life in OK. The same can be said for my '88 Trooper aswell, though it has been an AZ truck it's entire life. Now I'm just telling you my expirence, guys back east will be better able to tell you about rust issues with the frame out in that area

the trooper I own was from Colorado and doesnt have any rust on it and it was up in Boulder for several years.

Be prepared to replace everything rubber. Upper control arm bushings, vacuum hoses, rear bumpstops, door seals, wing vent rubber seals. I have repaired lots of rust. on the 4 door's rear fenders (ignore 1st picture, I cut floor out of donor truck), it came from Chicago area. My 89RS has minor rear fender rust, Kansas truck. The frames are solid on both trucks.


The 2.6 is a strong 4 cyl as good as any Nissan or Toyota 4 cyl. Far better than GMs 2.5 4 cyl that was in S10s. My 5spd 4cyl 89 Trooper cruises 75mph easy all day long.
