I just changed mine on my 98 Kia. What I did was yank the fuse out for the fuel pump in the fuse box. Then I tried to start it for a second to relieve the pressure. I bought a tool to remove the line but could only use it on the front side. Then I noticed all you have to do is push the line onto the filter and push the clamp section of the line forward, and then it slid right off. I put the new one on. I see some recommend priming the filter. I did not. I put it on, put the fuse back in and cranked it up. Turned over for 2-3 seconds and then started. I think 98-02 are the same but double check. No gas spilled out when I did it this way. I would think that if you just disconnect the battery, then you can't turn it over to release the pressure, then you'll have a mess. By taking out the fuse, you can still turn it over a couple seconds to releave the pressure. I don't have a shop manuel in this Kia, so maybe they recommend a different way, but my F150 shop manual gives these instructions. Hope this helps.
