I have a 00 Honda Passport and was thinking of locking the rear. I really don't know too much about this. Can you guys help point me in the right direction. I would really like a cheap but reliable locker. I know its a dana 44 but is it a 30 spline?

If you want cheap and easy, you want a drop-in or lunchbox style locker... which utilizes your existing carrier and doesn't require re-setting up the gears. Powertrax LockRight and No-Slip are in this category.

do you have limited slip? there are some oddities with the 2nd gen open D44 and using such lockers, but the more common limited slip is pretty much std D44 in this regard.

Open the hood on your Passport... Look for a metal plate that's attached to the firewall, with several 3 number/letter codes...

If one of those codes says 'G80', then you've go a Limited Slip Dif. - But if the code isn't there, you still might have the LSD, so...

With your Passport out of gear, the e-brake off, and the front wheels chocked - jack-up the rear so that both tires are off the ground (using jack stands and all other safety measures, of course)... Once it's in the air, manually rotate one of the rear tires...

If you have LSD, then both of the tires will turn in the same direction... If not, and you have an open differential, then they will turn in opposite directions.

You kind of need to know, either way - if for no other reason than when you change your differential fluid - otherwise, you might fail to use the required LSD additive (assuming that it's LSD) and toast it pretty soon after.

I'll let someone else field that other question -- My answer would probably take days to read <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif" alt="" /> <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/lol.gif" alt="" />

I'll take a poke at giving the basics of the "modified" D44. The one used in the 2nd gen Rodeos and Passports ('98+) uses a larger diameter pinion than a standard D44. This is the main thing that sets them apart. This is only a problem if you want to re-grear.

Also, for some reason or another, none of the available "drop-in" lockers seem to fit the 2nd gen open carrier <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif" alt="" />

Don't ask why <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/scared.gif" alt="" />

So my best bet would to be to regear it. That way it will make up for my 32's and i could drop a locker in it.

Nope. The only way to regear the second gen d44 is to have a special sleeve machined to fit on the pinion shaft. I think only 1 or 2 people have actually done this, good luck getting a shop to try it. Furthermore, your only choice is 4.77s, which is a good match for 32s, but is extremely rare to find for the d44.

If you have an open differential, the lockright can be made to fit, you will just need to get shims machined for it. Pm Bansil, he can tell you more.

The rear gear kit that indy has say it will do it for a 98 to 03 isuzu rodeo. It also says it then allows you to drop any locker in it. So this kit won't work for my truck

It can work, but like Rodeo guy said, you will need to have a spacer machined to sleeve the new pinion, in order to match the larger than usual, stock pinion. Like was mentioned, 4.77's are an option, and from what I recall, new factory 4.77 R&P's are still available, but they run around $450. This is the same as the stock pinion, so you wouldn't have to use a sleeve. You then would have to locate a 4.77 front 10-bolt 3rd from either a '98 amigo, or Trooper. If you re-gear, you can install a standard carrier, which will accept any drop-in locker. You can also install any full case locker like Detroit or ARB.

The other option is to locate an entire 4.77 axle and swap it in.

It can be done, but the cost vs reward starts getting pretty thin if you have to pay a shop to do custom work. Most people run 32's with stock gearing with little problem.

If you're interested in locating gears, start on car-part.com. The modified D-44 gears should be available from st. Charles Isuzu.
