Getting the Wheeling Fever
I've looked around on the search to try and find this info, but no luck. I replaced the timing belt about a month ago. Now with everything back together it runs rough and is using more gas. Also having trouble going up hills. As in aways having the tranny dropping down to make it up the hill.
Now I should have replaced the tensioner (not realizing it was bad) so when I checked the timing it was shakey. But I need the dwell and that kind of info so I can make sure I'm not off by a tooth on the crank pulley. I looked for the mark on the case to line everything up but didn't find it when changing the timing belt so this is possible. Is there a way of checking that or can I just check the timing to see were I'm at.

I don't know the answer to your specific question, but hopefully one of the others here does. Just chiming in because with the help of this forum (lots of info upon searching) I changed my own timing belt and it seems to be running fine - I didn't even set the timing as it seemed to be right on - something I'd like to get to though. I hope you are not off by a tooth, that would be a drag - you should have seen the marks on the case though the manual clearly points them out - I assume you are referring to the timing belt marks inside the cover on the pulleys(?).

Good luck! Nice to see people trying this.

Hey I thought I was right on too. But after driving it I can tell a big differance. I need to get back into it again anyway cause the tensioner is bad. So if I am a tooth off I want to fix it at the same time.
Thanks for your reply.

not a dis, but what i can tell from your post, you didn't do your homework the first time around; so it's good you're here asking questions. HereÆs my take

  1. you gotta get a manual, imo. The best is expensive, the factory www.helminc.com
or online www.alldata.com $25 per year.
  2. when you do the timing belt, the accepted practice is to do all these at the same time:
    • timing belt
    • timing belt tensioner
    • water pump, because you have to do the timing belt again if the pump goes
    • accessory belts or serpentine, whichever is yours
  3. dwell and timing. This is computer controlled. You install the belt correctly and da brains does da rest
  4. öö I looked for the mark on the case to line everything up but didn't find itöö now this is what worries me and suggests youÆd benefit from a manual. First off, there are 3 timing marks to line up
    • 1 each for the two cams and
    • the crank mark with the mark on the water pump
  5. and a whole procedure to follow
  6. ööIs there a way of checking that or can I just check the timing to see were I'm at.öö since you are going to replace the tensioner anyway, you might as well go in there and redo it; you are going to take the belt off, essentially, to do the tensioner anyway, and do the water pump too.

hereÆs an illustration from the manual showing overall the marks to align. ItÆs not all that clear at this size, but it will give you an idea of what you should look for.

also search for JLEMOND post(s) on this. i remember he recently walked someone else through this procedure with concise, precise written instructions (BEWARE: ALL CAPS) that was quite remarkable for such a visual procedure. I think it was on this (4x4wire) site, but may have been on planetisuzoo. So with those instructions and others you can find here through search, maybe you could get by without a manual or alldata if you *have* to. (I couldnÆt, but. . .

good luck

Thanks so much for the info, I do have a manual but I could not find the mark on the casa the manual was telling me to look for. But I will search either site to find the walk through info. and I copied the pic. to take a closer look. It may be a better pic. than the one in my manual.
I know I'm a lucky one I was so worried about this and knew if I was off by enough it would have up the whole thing and would had been starting from scratch. I did turn the motor to make sure there was't any major resistance before starting it for the first time.
Again thanks and I'll check into a better manual.
