Getting the Wheeling Fever

We've owned our 95 Trooper since new and now (I assume) the freon seems to be gone. I'd like to tackle this myself - can anyone help get me started? Does this stuff leak or wear out after 11 years? Is just a simple recharge the first step - I've never done that either.
