My 2000 4Runner SR5 4wd has stock wheel/tires at 225/75/15. I'd really like to upgrade them to 265/70/16.
Having researched for a while, I was told the bigger wheel/tires will fit well (no rubing) without any lifting. However the problems appear to be, brake (it takes longer to stop), sluggish (it accelarates much slower), and fuel inefficency. I do not want to make my runner look better by sacrificing too much on performance. (By the way, it costs $$$ to regain performance by re-gearing )
Can anybody who did this tell me your real experience? Thanks in advance,

Can anybody who did this tell me your real experience? Thanks in advance, You're going to be just under 31 inces of tire... You will notice a drop in power, and fuel economy... A friend of mine went from 235/75/r15's to 265/75/r16's He said he noticed about a 1MPG drop (we did the math to compensate for the bigger tires) but not a big loss in power. Hope that helpped. -Dano- <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/rolleyes.gif" alt="" />

Thanks for the reply. 1 MPG drop is not big deal as long as no big power loss. I think I can go ahead to do it...

my calculations say you are going from 28" to 30.5" tires.
if you think you're engine is sluggish now, wait til you get the 265 ones...
if you have a friend with the 265 tires, go borrow it and see how they feel.

You won't like the results if you over gear. Your truck will be sluggish. If you have an automatic transmission, it will downsift a lot too. I went from 235s to 10.5x31 on my f150, and soon thereafter had to buy a new torque convertor. My T100 had 10.5X31s on it when I bought it, and when new-tire-time came, I got it closer to stock with 9.5X30s and the performance improved a lot, the downshifting stopped, and gas mileage went up. The fender wells aren't as full, but it was worth it. I'm going to put 4.88s in my 87 4runner before I 'over-tire' it.

I went 215R15 to 33x10.50R15LT. Gears are just fine now (stock 4.10), no noticeable power loss. Maybe because turbo-diesel have more torque at lower rpm. Goes better than small tire equipped 3.0 V6 I drove few days ago.
Fuel consumption is same or even better with taller tires than before.

Just give everybody an update... I did the upsizing and have been driving the truck for several weeks. I haven't noticed much difference. Maybe I am too dumb...
I really love the look of my truck now! (with chrome 16x8 wheel, Duelers A/T)

I upgraded before I brought the truck home. That way I wouldn't know the difference.
I'm looking for a new set now and plan to stay with the same size.

Upgraded to the 265/70's, felt slower then upgraded the paper air filter to a Green Filter (same style as K&N but IMO better) and got it back plus a little more.
