QuadraCrap? #751866 09/15/06 03:33 AM

I have a 1976 Jeep CJ7 with the 304 V8, TH400, and QuadraTrac transfer case. I need to have the transmission rebuilt and was considering swapping the transfer case. I don't do any major rock climbing but I do take it on some pretty rough trails. Right now it is pretty much all original. In the future I want to lift it enough to accommodate 33" tires. Does anyone know if there is a different transfer case that will work with the TH400 that wouldn't take a lot of modification or could anyone offer any ideas for a tranny/tcase swap that wouldn't be outrageously priced?

dana 18. if you want to swap out the rear end to one that has a centered diff, the dana 20 and dana 300 are good swaps.

i'm not sure how a center output t-case would work with your offset rear end. it might work though.

Is your QuardaTrac misbehaving at present? If not, I'd suggest keeping it, as long as you don't intend to do any heavy duty rock climbing. Granted, the QuadraTrac isn't nearly as strong as a Dana 20 or a Dana 300 t-case, but I've seen plenty of them work fine as long as they are serviced properly and not overly abused.

All CJ7 differentials are offset to at least a small degree. I have a Dana 300 transfer case, which is considered a centered rear output. And yet, the differential in the AMC 20 rear axle is slightly offset -- by that, i mean that the two axle shafts are different lengths.

CJ7 axles that were mated with a QuardaTrac T-case are even more offset, clearly to the point where it is observable without measuring.

1977 CJ-7, fiberglass body, AMC 360 w/ headers, DUI ignition, Edelbrock intake and Holley 4150 carb, TF999, Dana 300, 4.56 gears lockers, York air comp, 4" susp lift, 2" body lift, BFG 35" M-T tires, Megashifter, AGR pump & box, REP8000 winch.

most are but the q-tracs are different because the rear output is offset like the dana 18.

I've been hearing a grinding sound up front which leads me to believe that the chain may be stretched. I guess I could replace the chain. I guess what I'm wondering is how the costs would compare for rebuilding the tranny/t-case I have now and for changing them both out.
