Getting the Wheeling Fever
The lifters in my wife's 97 Trooper are making noise at 135k miles. I have changed the oil every 3k miles consistantly but the noisey lifters come and go. The dealership wants close to $2000 (cost of parts only) to replace all of them and I guess there are 24, and other automotive places can't get them. Where can I buy replacements at a reasonable price and or would it be better to just spend that 2k towards the cost of a replacement remanufactured engine?

Send Jerry Lemond an email. He has the lifters and
will do you much better than any dealer.

Do that or do what most people do....

Nothing. It's not really hurting anything. Just listen to the ticking 3.2 Isuzu engine and drive on down the road.

Others have gone through and had their lifters (properly called Hydraulic Lash Adjusters, or HLAs) replaced, only to have the new ones start ticking after a couple of thousand miles. Its a crap shoot.

I think you should go through the AutoRx route first...

My ticking HLA's tell me when its time to change the oil

I have done quite a bit of research and found that the probable cause could be clogged lubrication holes in the valve train that are fairly small. I tried a lighter weight oil and after several thousand miles the tapping is making it's come back now.

This is a question for all, if the problem truly is caused by poor lubrication from very small holes that get clogged easily, why wouldn't it be possible to open up the holes a bit? Exactly which holes would be causing the problem?

When I bought my rodeo it had lifter tick then the head gasket blew. I cleaned out everything with brake cleaner and it has not ticked once. I wasn't even worried about the tick I just wanted everything clean so there was no chance of problems form contamination and it cured the tick also,
