i remember when this all happened. the samari had outrigers on it that displaced weight to the side of the vehicle. plus the driver whiped the wheel in an S patern and held it threw the patern to cause it to roll. any 4x4 put threw the exact test will roll. but samari was singled out---

Actually, they put *many* 4x4's through exactly the same test & only the Samurai (& I *think* the Isusu Trooper)failed.
Consumer Reports only faulted the Samurai (Trooper?), it doesn't like the harsh, noisy ride of the tracker/sidekick, but has not called them "unacceptable" due to safety concerns.

now- fast forward a few years- and you'll notice that all suzuki 4x4 vehicles have nasty insurace ratings.

Hmmm, my wife's 95 tracker has lower basic liability rates than my 84 Toy pickup..... Both are pretty cheap in this neighborhood....

Actually...
In the first round of tests (25-30 passes) down the track, the Samurai proved to be one of the best scoring vehicles... (I have the test results to prove it). But then the powers that be (name escapes me here at work) had the testing continue on the Samurai until it had over 70 passes and the last of which got tippy when they figured out how to tip it.
"If you can't roll it, I'll find someone that can!"
(remember that quote?)

It's all relative. The relavent parameters are where the center of mass is located and track width. The higher the center of mass (big lift, hard top), the easier it will roll if it "trips" when sliding sideways. The wider the track width, the less likely to roll during a sideways skid. Bottom line is: if you seek a "safe" 4wd truck..........you're screwed. As far as rollover safety, any lowrider is much more forgiving than any Tracker, but you might have trouble driving over speed bumps without bottoming out. You just have to decide if you want enough ground clearance to drive off road. If you do, learn all the nuances of driving a truck with a relatively high center of mass and get used to it. If you just want 4wd, buy a Subaru.

Need a Spot
I've had my '95 Tracker for 5 years now, and absolutely love it. True, it does feel like its getting kicked around in a crosswind, but it loves the snow.

Sadly, I'll have to give him up soon for an Isuzu Rodeo I'm buying, because I need more cargo space.

But yeah...Trackers are tough lil things smile
