What if ...

something was plugged somewhere.

That poor oil pump would be trying like hell to move oil, and there would be a helluva lotta stress on it.

Wonder if that stress could cause odd noises, like maybe focing the impeller to run out of "true" and cause that uneven wear ?

Maybe there was even enough backpressure to do some strange things to the bypass valve in the oil filter, like cause it to "chatter" or something...

No impeller on this oil pump. The rotor, on the other hand, probably would not be under too much stress, it would just run dry.

Steve, when you pulled the valve cover, was there oil sitting up there? Did it look "fresh"? Was there galling on the cam journals? If there was an oil starvation problem, it would show up there first.

Did you spin the oil pump in the correct direction when you tested it? You hadn't drained the oil first, right?

There was no evidence of debris in any of the oil passages?

Can ya blow air through all of them?

Well I added a quart of oil right when it started making all the sound, and I didnÆt pull the valve cover off for a week or so.

A little bit. But no more than the ôoriginalö head. So IÆm not sure if itÆs anything or not. IÆm going to show it to my local machine shop dude and see if he thinks itÆs anything. IÆd take pics but my camera doesnÆt show that sort of thing very well.

Ya I think so. But then again that was a few months agoà As for oil, I drained the oil and added some fresh before I spun it. So I guess its possible that oil just didnÆt have a chance to circulate??? I spun it for about a minute with my drill, and nothing. So could that explain why none came up?

Anyway I think I might just have to get it back together and run it before IÆm going to know what the problem was...

I'm also going to take the "bad" block into my local machine shop and have them take a look. Is it possible its one of the bearings on the crank, or something that I just can't see?

Well, like normal IÆm slacking abit. Anyway I got some more stuff done. I picked up a pilot bearing remover at harbor freight, 17 bucks. I had to speed about an hour filing on it to get it small enough to fit. But it worked.

There should not have been a need for filing. Just pop that sucker in there or tip it a bit. I've got the same wonderfully constructed tool and it works for me..

What is in the 2nd pic?

Ya I had too. The three arms (things) would not fit through the hole in the pilot bearing. So I had to file them down.

An engine. <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/pfft.gif" alt="" />

I used the die grinder on the water pump passages. CanÆt really see it on the pics. Sorry

Got abit more done.

Question;

Can I use this port (in the pic) for a second oil pressure sensor?
I would like to add a real oil pressure gauge to the dash. But I want to keep the stock light in the dash happy. The simplest way I figured was to add a second (separate) sensor.

I was thinking on the these guages. To match the tach I already have. (EDIT LOOKS LIKE THEY COME WITH SENDING UNITS...) can i use the sensors (like the one in my pic) i already have? Or am i going to need to get something else?

HI STEVE ON THE PASS SIDE OF THE BLOCK JUST ABOVE THE PAN RAIL YOU WILL FIND ABOUT 4 -5 SMALL ALLEN HEAD SCREW ,YOU CAN USE ANY ONE OF THESE TO PICK UP YOUR OIL PRESSURE , THAT IS THE MAIN OIL GALLEY FOR THE ENG , OR YOU CAN USE USE THE ONE IN THE PIX A LOT OF THE FACT,, TRUCKS CAME WITH THE SENSOR SCREWED IN THERE OR THE SW IN VARIOUS YEARS , JUST WHAT EVER IS THE EASIEST TO GET TO , ,OH ONE OTHER THING ON THE OIL PICKUP PIPE WHERE IT GOES INTO THE BLOCK MAKE CERTAIN THAT THE RUBBER ADAPTER IS IN THERE AND THAT IT FITS TIGHT IN THE BLOCK AND AROUND THE PIPE ITSELF, OR YOU WILL HAVE LITTLE OR NO OIL PRESSURE . Yep I did. I also added a little black sealant around it to make sure it was sealing. Probably not necessary but what the hell right?
