 80-90 or 80-140 gear lube?

For axles.... which is a better bet? is the 140 to "thick"? what do you think zuk? I'm currently running the "HD shock" gear lube from Redline with no complaints, but it's time to change the rear end fluid and I'm not paying those prices anymore. I'm gonna take a guess that the thicker stuff eats up gas milage, but has more cushion when your pushing it right?
Another Q, I have the Pinion pointed up for a CV shaft. I've been putting in +1 qt. is there a "proper" way to know how much oil to put in? can you put to much oil in?

I had the Mobil 1 75W-140 in my '91 truck diffs for a year or so...did no harm, but when first installed I thought I noticed a slight drag when accelerating, which probably translates into worse mileage. Now I've gone to the M1 75W-90, but I didn't notice any decease in drag at first. It's all pretty subtle.

Basically an 80W-xx oil will be as thick when cold no matter what the "xx" number is. That is the hot viscosity, so an 80W-90 will be thinner when hot than an 80W-140 but that hot viscosity is still thinner than the cold viscosity. The 80W-140 will simply not thin out as much as the 80W-90 will as it heats up.
I fill my rear diff by backing up my driveway onto a set of ramps. This tilts the fill plug up higher and I just fill it until oil runs out like normal. Usually takes around 3 qts.

Usually takes around 3 qts. 2.5-2.75 qts is what i just put in my rear axle last night. <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/kewl.gif" alt="" />

if we go below 90F we call it a "cold front". Uh, I hate FL's hot muggy weather. 80-140 it is.
