would there be any other reason that the dshaft might've ripped like that besides vibration/it being out of balance?

ie - ujoints not greased enough, dshaft too long, it hitting/rubbing against the old carrier bearing hanger ass'y, something w/ the rear diff, something wrong w/ the yoke, the pinion angle being off too far, the diff flange + the tranny flange having different angles... anything?

I just want to make sure I'm not too far off thinking that this is really caused by the vibrations from lack of balancing. The shop owner WILL NOT stop saying that it was because it's too long. I don't think 3.5" over the standard 60" is going to make THAT much of a difference.

also: u have the funniest stories ted
i have some customers like that... we pray for the day when they decide they want to switch providers

that driveshaft was whippin around with a good amount of force, you should see the size of the dent it put in the skid plate.

I'm not positive exactly where it was leaking from but my gas all leaked out. I figured the tank lost a pinch weld or something but I had a garage inspect it and they said it was the sending unit.
Yes that's on top.
The gas tank got jammed upwards in pretty good fashion and there's not much clearance between the underside of the bed and the top of that sending unit.

I'm not sure where the leak is actually coming from though, just going on what they said.

If the gas tank got pushed up against the underside of the bed it probably cracked the hard lines coming out of the sending unit. They were probably half rusted through anyway being the in northeast rustbelt. Ask me how I know. I would try to get your lawyer to get reimbursement for the shaft, tank, sending unit and skid plate. It was obviously their fault since the shaft wasnt balanced. Im sure theres many people on this board succesfully running one piece driveshafts. Just get them to chime in for proof for your case.

Hey, I'll happily chime in. I've got a 92 extra cab 4x4 with a lift. I went to a 1 piece driveshaft about 100k miles ago and have no problems. I'm not sure what the length is, but if you want any info I'll get it for you. Driveline Service in Sacramento built it for me. I did have some issues with vibration, but they went out of their way to resolve said issues. Bottom line is that a 1 piece is a common mod and there should not have been any failures.

Good luck with these guys. I hope they decide to do the right thing.

Thanks jeepeater

here's some pics finally, they're all pretty self explainatory. You can see how the driveshaft bent in a couple of the pictures, it was warped pretty good before it tore.

You can see in one of the gas tank pics where all the gas was leaking from the (most likely) busted lines on top of the tank.

Also check out the weights that were on there from the factory.
Thanks for not balancing my driveshaft, how many more hints did you need?

Thats some damage! You can see the bed cross member reinforcement is bent in the one picture! I've never seen a balancer that big as shown in your picture. I've seen the thin tab balancer on the one side of the shaft but not the thick one. Was that stock or did the shop stick that on there? I would definitely seek reimbursement for the tank, skid plate and sending unit.

Those balancing tabs were from before I owned it, I'm assuming from the factory.

It is huge, huh?
