I'm new to this forum- just purchased an '01 4Runner 4x4, w/ 66,000 miles. After three days, the "VSC Off" , "VSC Trac", and "Check Engine" warning icons have come on simultaneously but unexpectedly, on two separate occasions. Any ideas on what's going on? Thanks in advance for the help.

Not for certain, but accordomg to the local Goodyear store, who hooked it to the computer, it is the evap. system within the emissions system. The Toyota dealer has to fix it. The dealer I spoke to indicated that the "check engine" light coming on automatically triggers the "VSC Trac" light and the "VSC Off" light. Once the evap system problem is corrected, they will reset the system and it should take care of it. I have not yet taken it in to the dealer to have it fixed as they said it was not an urgent situation. I will probably get it in there this week.

You are correct about one light triggering the rest.
If its an evap code, then the dealer will hook the scantool up to it, and check each evap sensor to find the faulty one. Probably an hour or 2 of labor plus the price of the sensor.

Not sure if I'm too late to help, but this happened to my 2001 and the culprit was a faulty gas cap. I guess there is some pressure sensitive check valve in there that was stuck open. Might want to invest $15 in a new one before spending any $$ at the dealer.
Good luck.

I have a 2001 4runner with 124000 miles. My vsc track, vsc off and engine light came on in Dec. of 2005. Took to dealer, said it was catalytic convert $1300.00. I searched for different options. Went on vacation for 7 days in Jan. and when I got back all lights were off and stayed off until Sept 2006. I will try replacing the gas cap first before doing the catalytic converter. A 2001 4runner has 2 catalytic converts and the back one is the cheaper one.

Dealer didn't have an explanation as to why the lights stayed off so long.

In this case, I had already checked the gas cap after having been forewarned about that potential problem. But it turned out to be the charcoal canister in the emissions system. The dealer replaced it and agreed to eat the cost (about $450 +/- total for parts & labor) since we had only had the vehicle one week. That was almost one week ago and everything seems fine so far. Thanks for all of the feedback.

Well, at least cheaper that the converter. I think mine is fixed after the fuel injections system was cleaned throughly and a new fuel filter. It's been about a month now and the converter code hasn't come back on. About $250.00. I'll take that any day over $1200.00.

I have been having problems with my check engine, vsc, etc lights also. The first time it was my charcoal canister leaking-replaced that. The second time I believe it was too much oil on my K&N filter that I had recently serviced. It went out after about 1000 miles of driving after I oiled it. But, this is the third time that it has came on now, so I went to Autozone and had them run the OBD II on it. Turns out I have a bad O2 sensor(Bank 1) which means it's before the catalytic convertor. Either that, or the convertor itself. Either way, I'm gonna take it to Toyota this week and get it straightened out. I'll let you know what happens.
