In this case, I had already checked the gas cap after having been forewarned about that potential problem. But it turned out to be the charcoal canister in the emissions system. The dealer replaced it and agreed to eat the cost (about $450 +/- total for parts & labor) since we had only had the vehicle one week. That was almost one week ago and everything seems fine so far.
