newbie here who needs a lot of help, i have a 1990 jeep wrangler 4.2 automatic, i am trying to do a ignition bypass on it but not having much luck, things i have done, the stepper motor neddles are set,i have removed the wires from my loom and made all the splices, but it would not crank.what i did was go purple to purple and orange to arange, str8 from the ignition mod to the dist.what could i be doing wrong...i checked for a spark and had none, any help would be grate <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif" alt="" />

Coach what I advise is to cut the wires on the ignition box on the box side of the plug.. Then attach to the purple and the orange from the box to the purple and orange NEAR the dist... and on the firewall side of the dist plug.
Cutting the wires and making the ONLY route for the lectricity to be from the box straight to the dist.
I have never found one done correctly that would not fire promptly.
You WILL need to reset the timing after it fires.
I use two different colored wires so I will NOT be confused as the purple to purple and the orange to orange is necessary.

thanks i will go try that,,,,my other question is when the orange wire leaves the ign. box plug, it turns to green with a black strip.i have followed the orange wire all the way from the dist. into the firewall, but coming back from the ECM its green with the strip until it reaches the ign. box plug have you ever seen this. this is puzzling <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/scared.gif" alt="" />

If you look closely there are MORE wires coming out of the box plug than go into it!!!
That is the reason I say to cut the wores BEFORE they get to the plug!!!

ok what im gonna do in the morning is make me a little harness, purple & orange cut them at the dist. & the ign box and go from their...im new to this jeep stuff thanks for not givivng me the blues <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif" alt="" />

Coach The purple and orange from the firewall to the dist can be cut anywhere inline.. I like to cut them very close to the firewall.. This keeps the extra wires from hanging down.

jim i done a lot of tracing last nite, and from every thing i seen i can only find one orange wire it comes from the dist back to the firewall and into the ECM no orange wires come back out to the ign box its green with a strip, after it reaches the plug then from the plug to the box its orange. is the orange wire the one that has power to it that the coil gets its 12 volts from.and do i need to unplug the plug thats on the dist. when i make the new tie-in's

hey jim i finally got it, guess i was blinded with maddness lol, think im gonna have to put a new carb on it just cant seem to get that low speed miss out of it,,,guess i will look at a webber or something can u point me to a good one? also my timming sticker on the hood said to set it too 9degrees+2 btdc why add 2 degrees to it...what would be best to set it on just 9 or 11 thanks alot

Ok coach if it is running now put the light on it with the dist unplugged.. Set it at 6/8* btdc and run her around a bit. If she does NOT clatter you can advance it to 9/10* and run her around some more.. That is about all the advance I would put in one. If she runs and idles good leave it there.
Your slight idle miss might be a small vac leak somewhere and it might be AGE/WEAR.. Many of these never get the smooth constant idle that you might want. A different carb might not help any at all.

thanks for all the help...i forgot to add this is a new engine, so with any luck i cant have a lot of fun with it rideing along the beach with it, also done some reading on changing the dist. out and going to a H E I SYSTEM if this a good choice, i notice you can do alot with a jeep if you have the time to research it. thanks againg for the help
