Howdy Fred
It is entirely possible to take a R&P and carrier out and put new bearings or whatever and reinstall zackly as taken out. I have had to do this several times without problems.
One just has to make sure to reinstall everything like it came out.
If it doesn't make gear noise when you take it out it should not when back together. Even the squeeze thingy on the pinion can be reinstalled with not quite enough torque to squeeze it more than it was. Though this is not advised by many. I have never had any problems from reinstalling them.
I'm wondering just what could be a problem with your carrier... I have seen them toasted but not noisy with no obvious failures.
