Engine replacement options? #756207 10/07/06 10:53 PM

I have a 1985 4runner with a leaking head gasket.

I want to get it fixed but it's got nearly 200K on it, so would it be advisable to get a totally rebuilt 22RE to replace it with? Something with a few extras to make a few more HP?
I don't intend on doing any of the work myself, I'd have the engine shipped to shop (I think) and have them do the swap.

Also, should I condsider a diff model of engine? Are there higher HP engines that pretty much bolt right in?

I've done some reading but I got tired of the silly search here so I thought I'd just ask.

Isn't there somebody somewhere who swears by the 3ze? That's the 4cylinder out of the taco, right? I remember reading that they get about the same mpg that you do now, they make 150 hp though so they are defintely a performance boost. Plus they are OBDII, which would be nice. I'm thinking this is the way I would go. But that's just me... Guess it all depends on funds and what you can find.

Good suggestion. Swap that 2.7 in and enjoy. There are articles on Pirate and MarlinCrawler.com on how to make it work.

Thanks alot for the info guys. I'll check out those options. Funding isn't a huge issue but I'm not interested in spending 5K either.

I'll let you know which route I go and how it works out. Actually, this 4runner will just be a daily driver, I already have that green one built up (tho it has the anemic 22re too).

If you're willing to rebuild it with 22RTE pistons, add a turbo, and do megasquirt, It'll do significantly better than 150hp... Adds some cost.

The 2RZ and 3RZ are good swaps also.
