I also just use a block of wood to seat the seal with good results. Shouldn't need any special tools to put the bearings in... unless you don't have hands.

It certainly seems to me your are correct becuase as I think about it, if it was such a nightmare then why make it a regularly scheduled maintenance right? If Isuzu says do it, it must be required.

Isuzu assumes a significant portion of the miles are driven offroad through mud, sand, and water. As such, the seals don't keep everything out and the bearing grease needs to be cleaned out and changed. It's not a nightmare by any means.

I do know my friend is "cheap" - no offense but he always professes this and is trying to save a buck whether it buying a car or used tools.

Going cheap on maintenance can actually cost you much, much more further down the line. What is an hour of labor every 30K miles compared to buying all new bearings at 4X $60 per and maybe other failed components too? And pulling the old bearing races out and driving the new bearing races in is harder labor than simply pulling the bearing cages out to regrease them...

With that philosophy, why bother changing the oil?

Strider - good points, trust me I have been convinced!

A question here - is there a part no. or reference for the 26mm Snap Rings which need to be replaced for the job? I'm in a small town and the local Carquest store could find the seals, but not these rings.

Richard, you beat me to it!
I just completed a search for the very same info <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif" alt="" />

According to what I found - aside from the dealership...
Sometimes those 26mm snap rings can be found at NAPA - but a better bet would be to call Matt at Independent4x.

Six Isuzus, so far... still have three of them.

The Napa by me didnt have any metric ones when I needed one. I ended up with 1" snap rings from there which are a tight fit. It takes some fiddling but they will eventually go on. I dont expect them to pop off again either as tight as they fit.

I'm finally tackling this now and a couple of questions:

1. The snap ring that's supposed to be 26 mm is actually 20 mm on my wheel - I'm measuring ID and if that's not right, please let me know - either way it's smaller than specified but seemd to fit, any issue here?

2. Can't yet remove the oil seal so if you have a trick let me know - while trying to pry it, a steel band O-Ring slipped out from underneath it; it was between the oil seal and the inner bearing/race. This does not appear in any of the procedures or manuals - anyone got a clue what this might be? Perhaps it was part of the seal? The new seals I have do not have this.
