What ALL did I end up with?? '04 Tacoma TRD 4x4 Auto #757316 10/12/06 08:39 PM

off-road with double doors; 3.4L V6.

Help me here, it's been a LONG time since I've had a new Toyota, traded our '85 Toyota SR5 for this last night.

I know the obvious items, i.e. power doors, locks, daytime running lights, etc. But what I don't know, is, is this particular auto the 5-speed with overdrive?

Also, there's a powermode button - surely it's not the same as my Isuzu's, can someone explain when to use and NOT to use this feature?

What's the difference between the Off-road package and towing package?

And, can someone tell me for certainty if the LT265/75 R16 Yokohama tires will for sure fit this rig?

It came with whimpy highway tires in the 265/70 size.

What options come with the TRD Off-road? I know there are upgraded shocks, extra skid-plates, but what else?

Thanks!

Oh, and we got $1,750 for our 21yr old Toyota with 260k miles on trade in - can't complain, considering it was literally a bucket of rust.

Need a Spot
I have a 2004 reg cab 4 WD Tacoma. I had to put in a 2.5 inch lift to get my 32x11.50 BFG AT's to fit good. I think if you want to put bigger tires on you should lift it. I did a ToyTec 2.5 spacer and 2 inch schackle lift. It works good but I wish I had gone with the 3 inch spacer.

Not interested in lifting it - not now, I do appreciate the reply though.

It only has 25k miles, still under a long long warranty, and will be used for mild off-roading, but nothing hard core to require any kind of lift. Has good clearance already, and this truck will be used for towing the boat on day trips as well as home building construction sites.

So, you're saying that I need to put on a lift just to install tires that are barely a 1/2" taller?? If that. I only want to go from the OEM size of 265/70 to the 265/75's.

You can fit the 265/75R16's w/o any lift, I have been running the Yokohama Geolandar AT+II unlifted w/ no issues. (I have since done a mild lift.)

You probably also have the coveted rear electric diff locker. Should be a button on your dash RR Diff Lock.

Your truck has a 4-speed auto.

ECT Power Mode simply holds gears longer, allowing your truck to rev up beyond the normal shift points. How and when you use it is personal preference.

Ok, so the ECT Power mode IS the same concept as my Rodeo's Automatic. Great, thanks for the clarification.

I've read on another forum that the Power mode can be harmful to the overdrive system in the earlier '01-'02 Tacoma's causing transmission failure - anyone heard of any issues with Tacoma's auto's?

Also, on the locker, obviously we would use the button in a really stuck situation? Or does it come on automatically?

Sorry for the arrogance, we've just always had your standard 4x4

I haven't heard of any issues with the Tacoma tranny. I seem to get better MPG with the ECT turned on? Don't really understand why that would be the case?

I engage the locker before the getting stuck <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" /> You'll need to have the transfer case in 4WD-low range before the computer will let the locker engage. Even then you might have to drive forward a few feet while turning side to side to help it engage. To use it in 2WD or 4WD(high) you'll need to do the 'locker mod' found here.

I believe it will only do that if you have the TRD blower with URD fuel kit, and a non-upgraded valve body in the tranny. Stock, it should be fine.
And i believe it's a 4 speed auto, they didnt put 5 speed auto in until 2005... (i believe)
