Like I posted previously I just got me a 85 4runner. One thing is that the tailgate doesn't open. I was wondering if the rear window has to be down to open it? The motor is shot in the window. This is a problem I'm definitely going to fix but I need to know where to start. Does it work just like a pickup tailgate?

Roll Me Over
Window has to be down.
Try using a small 12v battery to bring the motor down, i've actually had to use my 7.2v R/C car battery once and it worked fine....
It might not be the motor, it could be something else, check www.4crawler.com he has lots of good troubleshooting tips.

Getting the Wheeling Fever
I bypassed all of the 'safety' measures and ran two wires from the motor to a DPDT switch in the dash and it works great. Probably needs a relay though. I also took out the switch in the tailgate that prevents you from opening the tailgate with the window up. You have to at least have it past the tracks in the top before you bring it down though. Radio Shack sells a 12 volt generator that comes in handy when testing parts.
