Body Damage is Cool
Long time no see kids, been busy as hell. :\ Anyway, for the last about 2 months the old yota has been belching blue smoke and losing oil quick. I figure the oil rings have gone, not quite sure but judging from the ammount of black soot on the exhaust.

Anyway, I plan on getting a long block, plain old 22R as I don't want to deal with the headache of converting to RE, and doing the install myself. IF I had the time, I'd build it myself, however, I'm moving to Austin, Texas in the next month, so time is precious.

Any suggestions from people in the phoenix area, or people who know of someone in the phoenix are who builds a decent 22R? I don't want to pay TOO much, ain't lookin for nothin fancy here, just somethin to get me around town and whatnot.

Also, seeing as this'll be my first motor install, ANY tips whatsoever are greatly welcomed!

Great to be back here, missed you guys :P

What up Kyle?
Are you sure it's rings and not valve seals????

Do your own motor?

Pull it, dismantle, machine work, (around $300, block, crank, rods and head)

EB engine kit spec'ed to your machine work.

Only prob this route, you have about a week downtime.
Otherwise, long-block swap can be done in a day (I did it).

I gotta cherry picker you can use.

Do a compression test; magic numbers are 142-171

If you're shooting for instant gratification, try www.risingsunengines.com
Personally I'd go with a local rebuild, and you've got the cherry picker offer.

Only other problem is maybe to simply replace the carb; I believe you have a couple of exchange places down there in the PHX area.

Blue smoke usually points to valve seals, esp if it goes away on startup, but a quick compression test will give you an idea of what kind of shape she's in.

I'm goin the instant gratification route, gotta get it done this weekend, sadly it's the only time I got off work till the end of the month. Thanks for the offer on the cherry picker Stace, I'll give you a ring this week also on the check list for the install is a new clutch(original with 184K ) and a rebuld kit for the starter.....fun fun all in all the truck should be good to go afterwards

Thanks for the links Margie, compression is on the low 80's to high 70's now.......and it smokes when its warmed up....not on startup.

This'll be my first engine swap so crossin my fingers to hope all goes well guided by my trusty '86 FSM of course

Swapping the 22re should be uhber easy. I'd talk to darin and see what he has, he's not exactly close to you but apparently he builds a nice 22r and the price should be good. I'd stay away from anyone who is selling cheep. Probably the cheepest option would be to find a good runing used engine and drop that in.

I'm in Austin.
I rebuild these in my ocassional spare time.. Flat fee price + machine costs + parts. If you're looking for bare bones rebuilds, I don't do those - I do them correctly or won't do them at all. Turn around is usually about a month.

If you can make it down to Austin and decide to do it yourself, I can point you in the right direction for free..

Get a *good* rebuild - full machine work, and use quality parts. I like the idea of going to a local shop also, using Ted's parts.
My 1981 came with a reman'd motor ($3k receipt) - it's rings failed at 75k miles.

Found this local. Should call them and get more specs. Could get this machined, and rebuild it to drop in your truck. Should be able to do everything for under $700 tops.

Thanks for the replies guys, I found a few places in town that seem reputable, I'm goin down down to check them out this week and hopefully get started on it this weekend seein' as its my only weekend off 'till next month. Stace, I'll definintally give you a call this week to pick up that cherry picker. I wish I had time to get things machined but I kinda left things till the end so sadly I gotta cross my fingers and pray the place I go to is good

Update:

Motor moved to next weekend, decided to order a clutch kit from Marlin at the last moment, didn't realise that their shop was closed 'till monday. :\

BTW I've heard nothing but good things about Marlin's clutch kits, I went ahead and got a new (resurfaced) flywheel from 'em, mine's in horrible shape I'm sure. I picked up the Heavy Duty one (1600 ft-lbs.) Any expirences with this particular clutch?

Thanks
