Getting the Wheeling Fever
Finished the rebuild last week, got the engine into my 84 4Runner that I'm swapping to EFI. I tried for 30-45 mintues on Saturday, cranking it to get it started and no go. I tried again yesterday with my dad holding the flapper door for the AFM open and still no dice. We left the truck in the garage and he came out later and there was a huge puddle of gas on the floor. The charcoal canister was completely full of gas and running over the top. I cracked the gas line at the cold start injector and had fuel pressure at the injector. We're kinda out of ideas. We had spark. Coil was working.

Any ideas? We still need to set the engine timing but was hoping to get it running to time it. Also, we took the spark plugs out and spun the motor over to build oil pressure, we never saw any pressure on the autometer gauge? Is that a problem??

Is cranking the motor over for 30-45 mintues bad?

I saw a slight pressure reading on mine when cranking w/out plugs. It's hard to see, it doesn't build up much pressure, but it definitely did it. One time I put the pump back on without the spring and it wouldn't hold pressure, but if you rebuilt yours you would probably not be as inempt mechanic as I.

WELL, I kinda had the samething happen to me. I have an 87 22re that wouldn't start after my rebuild. My culprit was the injectors. They were clogged up. Here's my thread on my problem.

Give it a read and see what you come up with

PS. Are you sure your not 180 degress off?

I don't know that I can help with the starting problem but it sure sounds like you have the vent and return lines switched at the gas tank.

You have an FSM right? You should check the TPS and the AFM and check for pulse at the injectors. Also make sure the ground wires in the EFI harness are grounded.

Fuel injectors where sent off, tested, and cleaned. All 4 came back in good shape.

I'm not sure what you mean by 180 degrees off? Engine timing?

I think you're right about the switch up on the vent and return lines.

I will check for pulses at the injectors and check the AFM and TPS. I believe I got all the ground wires connected.

I have the FSM. Everybody always talks about how good they are. I can't stand the thing . It takes forever to find torque specs and some of the directions are not always the clearest.

Thanks for the help!

Yes, he means engine timing.. You should be about to fire your #1 cyliner.. Look under the distrbutor cap.

The process should be to verify that you've got fuel and spark.. then we can help debug.

Mine couldnt start because I didnt connect one of the hoses on the bottom of the throttle body and check for all of your ground connections to the block and EFI.

I figured it out last night. One connector going back to the fuel pump wasn't fully connected Makes sense because I could never hear the fuel pump kick on so we started looking for power back there and never found it.

But, that's now the least of my worries at this point. See thread Other thread talking about my new problem
