I just feel for it. I keep the car running then hold my hand by the pipe/ muffler / cat, exc.

If the exhaust is cold you can use water and dish soap mix, from a spray bottle. It will make little bubbles from the leaking area when you spray it on. Works well when youÆre looking for air leaks on an air tank too.

it depends where it is. did they say?
for example, you can crawl under there under the exhaust while your helper plugs the exhaust pipe end with a rag.
if everything is all tight, it'll usually load up real quick, if there is a leak there won't be much restriction and you often can *hear* where the leak is -- follow your ears.

You can also see a grayish colored area around the leaks. Sometimes very faint but there nontheless. Exhaust tubing around here turns brown right away so that gray coloring stands out. Check rusted areas on muffler, especially around crimps.

In cold, damp weather (may not happen where some of you live) you can also look under the vehicle when it is first run for the day and usually see condensation at the leak site.

Start off checking the places that are prone to leakage:
where two flanges meet (gaskets)
flex pipe
bottom of the muffler

in my case where the exhaust pipe meets the muffler is cracking around the weld

when looking for a container to hold drained brake fluid, find a container that is different from the beverage you are currently consuming.

Use a piece of tubing (rigid, like brake line) attached to a rubber hose. Stick hose in ear. Listen for whistling noises at joints (collector gaskets, where manifolds join to downpipes, etc).

The Y pipe went on my 99 amigo two years ago. I remember a few other folks talking about the same thing in a relative time frame.
I don't remember what it was about the pipe, just that I replaced it. <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/drunk.gif" alt="" />

Edit:
Now I remember... My driveshaft let go on and killed it.
