Getting the Wheeling Fever
Finally figured out my problem on not being able to start it. Once the fuel pump was plugged in all the way, it worked So, we started it up and set the engine timing to 5 degree BTDC with the jumper. Everything seems to be running well. Motor idled great and sound good. We were going to break the cam in by running it for 20 mintues at 2000 rpm. About 3 minutes into it, the dang thing started blowing white smoke from the tail pipe

We think it's a head gasket with like 5 minutes total run time on the rebuild. Anybody have that happen to them?? It was a rock gasket, new head bolts, shaved head. We made sure we torqued the bolts correctly.

What a frustrating feeling. I'm thinking of replacing the head gasket with a OEM Toyota. Should it matter? Any help would be great. Thanks for listening

You need to talk to engbuilder. The head could be shaved too much. Not sure of the correct word, squish? gap too tight.May need a thicker head gasket to get it right.good luck!!

Had the head gasket failed previously? If so, there's probably a lot of excess moisture collected in the muffler lining, and this needs considerable time and heat to burn off. Been there, done that. If the previous headgasket did not fail, well, you;re probably right, but you should pressure test the cooling system to be sure.

pull all your plugs and do a compression test, that should tell you.

Some people report problems with the Felpros.. I've had decent luck with them as long as they're torqued in the right order.

When you rebuilt, did you deck your block and check the surface of the head? What's the history on the motor?

unless you have water in the oil or in the cylinders I would say you are just burning the crap out of the exhaust.

Getting the Wheeling Fever
I started it yesterday and after several minutes of smoking, it stopped. HG is fine, I didn't give the engine enough time to warm up and burn the crap out of it. This was the first rebuild / HG I've done so I was kinda scared starting it Thanks for all who have posted.

Remember in my previous post about proper break in or something to that effect? You were just burning oil out of the cylinders. Oil that you put in there so that as the truck starts there is some kind of lube in the cylinders. WELL, you just finished buring off the oil on the cylinder walls. Congratulations
