Yea that will be my last resort. I already have the OEM one so I'm gonna try to get that one to work.

Getting the Wheeling Fever

I am going to give you some good news; this is straight from a Foreman at a dealership and has been a Toyota Tech for over twenty years.

At the factory they over torqued the front fitting, which caused the threads to distort. He told me that they do not even mess with it. They take it loose at the engine and replace the line. What I would do is to take it off at the engine, put it in a vise and using six-point wrenches try a break it loose. If you cannot get it loose, get a new line. He also told me that all 3.0 V-6 runners and pickups were this way it is not year specific.

I heard the same thing basically, that the dealerships won't even mess with the filter at all, and never change them.

Anyway I just cut the fuel lines on each end then slipped on rubber fuel hose. I bought a generic fuel filter (approx. the same size with two male ends) that I pulled off the shelf at Crappy Tire ($10) and hose clamped it in place. I find this method works the best and is much cheaper and easier than an oem replacemet. I dont even have to secure it to the frame rail I just rest it on the cross member (or zip tie it). I have had no problems with this method at all.

Just be sure it is high pressure hose (which fuel line hose usually is), and not a simple vacuum hose. I changed my filter and ended up using the same method with the high pressure hose.

i was able to get the front fitting off, but i think that the above comment is right. also, as a minor note, make sure that their is no pressure in the line (i know im just repeating things) and also leave the gas cap on. when i did mine, i was under the truck, and my brother opened the gas cap (y i still dont know) and gas started running out of the line. i was able to plug it, but recieved some rather nasty chemical burns down my left arm and side, from my chin to my waist. Well, spraying the PB Blaster all week helped as I got the back fuel line fitting loose easily, but I couldn't get a flare wrench on the front fuel line inlet. So I decided to remove that front section of fuel line with the filter to separate them in the vise. Wow, I had to take quite a few fuel line clamp bolts out, the filter bolts out, the parking brake cable bolt out before I could remove the fuel line/filter. Once I got them in the vise the front fuel line fitting popped loose pretty easy as well. Got it all back together and it feels more responsive. Some nasty stuff came out of the old filter so I'm sure it was blocking some fuel pressure.

I don't know what you have in the gas in CO, but I had gas all over me because I didn't take the cap off and the tank pressure kept forcing gas out. Once I relieved the pressure it stopped. You shouldn't be getting any chemical burns from gasoline so your gas must be messed up or something.

the main reason for the burns was that i didnt exactly wash up right away. it wouldnt have been so bad if i had, but i finished replacing the filter before i did, which took about 20 minutes.

That still doesn't sound right though. I had gas on my hands and arms for at least half an hour yesterday while doing the job. They must be putting some additive in your gas out there for you to get chemical burns. No matter what, that fuel filter job is a messy one so be ready for it. I think it's definitely worth changing though. I can't believe Toyota would say it's a non service item when everyone knows that filter eventually get clogged. That's what they do, filter out the bad stuff.

Roll Me Over
Some people have skin that is more sensitive. I can play in solvents, gas, cement or kerosene all day long and it does not bother me. I have a thirty-gallon parts cleaning tank that has kerosene in it, a friend was over, and I was helping him rebuild his front axle. I made him do all the cleaning and his skin was bright red and itchy after about five minutes. He is red-headed (when he had hair) with real fair skin.

I know you're done, just thought I would add a method that has worked well for me. After getting the rear fitting off, lodge a wrench onto the front nut and use the filter itself for the torquing. The ends of the filter have I believe 17mm or19mm areas to wrench on....whatever, this sort of forces everything to stay in line and not bind while you are using a good bit of leverage to break it loose.

I gave up I just couldn't get the rear fitting out without stripping even with a 6 point wrench. I'm gonna cut the filter out and put a generic one in. Is there such thing as a high flow filter?
