This one has me stumped. The engine idles well at ~800. When I take it up to 2000 or so it begins to miss intermittently in an irregular pattern...cutting out every three or so seconds. While driving, it lacks power when you take it up past 2000 (through main power band), as though the timing is not advancing properly. This could be because it is indeed not advancing, or I have spark issues. I checked disty sg air gap, coil, igniter, egr system, timing, valves. All are within spec. I replaced pcv, wires, plugs, rotor, and cap, and checked for vacuum leaks on intake. Haven't messed with TPS yet. By the way, it is throwing no codes.
At this point I am thinking igniter, but the thing checked out when I tested it (resistance in spec.). I believe the ecu/igniter is responsible for advancing the timing...correct me on this.
The other possibility is bad injector?
Any ideas/courses of action greatly appreciated.

I would check that sorry auxillary air valve that is located under the throttle body.If it's stuck open,it acts like a wide open choke on a carb. There's a 1" air hose connected to the front of it.Warm the truck up,crimp that air hose with vise grips.See if the truck runs good with the hose crimped. If that solves the problem, dump your throttle body and get an early 90's one.It uses a wax valve instead of a spring, gate, and metal thermostat for cold start.good luck!!

I would also check the 02 sensor.
If Mad Max had a 4runner...

Also possible that an injector or 2 are not firing (or mis-firing). Trick is to check the factory crimps in the wire harness about 10" up from where the harness is bundled on the engine side. These have been known to cause issues, and soldering the corroded wires fixes it. Been covered here before, and there are pics somewhere. Originally posted by Esquire. Anyone know what happened to Darin? Been a long time since he's posted here.

take your timing light, check timing. rev, see if advancing, put to spec of its not there 5deg -diag.connector jumped-, ~12 unjumped. next put the timing light on each wire, rev to ~2000 rpm and hold it watch light for ignition misfires move on to next wire.
if you have an ignition misfire look at the distro cap, rotor, wires, and grounds. its possible the coil/igniter has problems at higher rpms. only test is replace with a known good unit.

Seems like theres alot of people out here now answering the questions that I used to field. Been sick off and on as well as dealing with some family issues etc. And no....didnt kill the wife, step-son or anybody. Aint even been in jail! 4Runner also got sick and Im in the process of wrapping up the engine re-install. Promise I'll come online more in the near future. Looks like there are a couple of "won't start's" that could be easily solved.... ~Darin
