Need a Spot
Went to car-parts.com...called 2 places...no luck..part not available...there must be someone who has had this problem out there and found a solution..
If I cant find the part I will manufacture a repair for this one...I'll let everyone know about the sucess and if it works I'll start a new carrer rebuilding this part.

Well... the Raider drove OK yesterday to work, out-n-about at lunchtime, but when I went to leave work last night, it would crank but not start. I parked it in the same spot as last time, where it was shaded by the building. No rotten seafood smell that I could detect from the ECU. No tools with me and no one to turn the key so I have no idea whether it was getting spark or not.

Tried pulling codes this morning -- "why no sir! I have no codes for you <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/nana.gif" alt="" />" Darn ECU <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/rolleyes.gif" alt="" />
Of course after about 5 seconds of cranking it caught and ran.

I'm wondering now about temperature, since this morning it has been sitting in the sun all warm and happy-like. Very strange. It's going home at lunch and staying there until I figure out what's going on.

A. I still think it's the FPR or a leaker injector or a bad check valve in the pump, and it won't fire up until it rebuilds a head of pressure at the injectors, which may be slow if the leak is relatively large compared to pump output. If the pump loses prime, it may take a LONG time, because positive displacement pumps are slow to self prime. Try to relate the severity of the problem to fuel tank level OR, pinch off the return line with some vicegrips before you try to crank it cold..

Sojo, the 89 parts manual I have in .pdf doesn't show that part available at all by itself, just as part of the whole tank part#. Try searching car-part for the whole tank. I come up with a bunch of whole tanks. Should be the same part for 2dr and 4dr, but check pickup depth. Anybody who can check this on caps?

Could you quantify LONG? <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/kewl.gif" alt="" />

I must have cranked Raider 10-15 seconds at a time many times over about a 25 minute period. Not even an attempt at lighting off. This morning with the sun shining directly on it, it lit off after less than 10 seconds of cranking...

It's sitting in the garage at home now. We'll see if I can get it to fail when sitting at home, snug and dry. <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/rolleyes.gif" alt="" />

Please note -- I'm not disagreeing with you, Eddy, just curious as to your definition of long... I would not be at all surprised if it is one or more of the things you mentioned. <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/cheers.gif" alt="" />

Long = several minutes of cummulative cranking (better not crank it for more than about 15sec at a time or you'll fry the starter).

Hmmmm. It starts when it gets warm. I wonder if your fuel cap vent is plugged, and when the fuel chills, it shrinks and it's REALLY hard to pull fuel against a vacuum. Leave the tank cap cracked open tonight and try it. Does it whoosh when you take the cap off cold?

Interesting thought on the fuel cap vent. I did crack open the filler cap when it wasn't starting, but didn't see any difference. I'm suspicious of the control relay, but have not gotten the Raider to go into failure mode while sitting in the garage at home.

Thanks for the input, and please keep it coming if other things come to mind!

Carry a sqirt can of gas, carb cleaner or anything that will light up the engine momentarily. When it wont start, spray in the throttle body. If it starts, it is fuel related. If not, look elsewhere. If fuel related, do you hear the fuel pump run? If so the relay and punp are good. Do you have injector pulse? Does it start if you hold the throttle to the floor? It may be flooded from a leaky injector.

Ok Guys I'm having the same issue on my 94ls. The only diffrence is I could hear the fuel pump and I get sparks but just wont run. I crank it off and on for 20 min or so while flooring the throtle, sometimes it will run and splutter like the engines flooded in the cylenders. After it clears up it runs with out any problems. I think somehow my engine keeps getting flooded. I could smell gas fums out of my tail pipe when trying to start the engine. It seems to be happing more frequent latly. Help Us
