Getting the Wheeling Fever

Have totally done all the cosmetics to truck, now time for engine. The truck as had a fuel injected engine installed. engine runs great. I know it is not a race car but would like a little more power. I am running 33's with a 4banger so was thinking of going 31's and try to find lighter wheels. Have been trying to find engine parts and cant seem to find any sites with much for my truck. Any info would be great. Is there much I can do besides header and maybe air cleaner. Cant do much to internal engine live in Calif. and this place sucks, seems to be picky. New to 4x4 am used to mustangs and the typical bolt on parts. This looks to be more technical but am up for challenge. Will try to post pics of before and after and updates. Thanks for any help!

Change gears...
If staying on 33's, go with 4.88's, and if going down to 31's, go with 4.56:1.

Real power out of a 22r-series means real internal work. You can help it out via gearing it correctly, light wheels, a header, 2.25" exhaust, mild cam, and slight compression increase.
Want more power than that, you'll need to do forced induction or start thinking about using a 5mm offset crank (stroker). Both will need aftermarket efi

A lifted rig will look kind of funny with smaller tires on it, if the 33's are new or in good shape buying a set of new 31's can easily run close to $600. You can buy used oem diffs with 4.87's(proper gear set for 33's) from a wrecking yard for under $500, find used diffs on Craigslist.com, Pirate4x4x.com or other 4x4 sites for about the same, or get a set of gears installed in both diffs for about $600(bench work, double that if the shop pulls the diffs). The right gear set will be the most power gain for your money. After matching the tires and gears look to a header and exhaust upgrade along with an intake upgrade. An ignition upgrade will help a little, as well as running an electric fan. If this isn't enough power you can rebuild the engine, Enginebuilders.com has all the go fast stuff you want, most of which is smog legal here in CA. You can usually get about 145hp out of the 22r block and still have a reliable engine. There are also turbo's and superchargers available for the 22r, though I don't think anything other than an oem Turbo will pass smog here in CA.
Even with these upgrades the Toy wont perform anything near what you are used to(assuming your Mustang was a V8). For performance gains like what you are probably accustomed to you would have to swap in a Chevy 4.3(which fits rather easily), or swap in a Supra straight 6.

In my own hindsight, do the gears first and save the engine stuff if you need something more in the future.
Personally I'm kicking the idea around of doing a SBC swap so I kept my stock gears in the truck. If I do the V8 swap I have a feeling the 4:10 gears will work very well with the 35's I want to run them with.
However, if I do keep the 22re I'll do gears pronto. With the engine work I have already done it should actually run pretty good then.
No matter what you do, keep in mind it will still be a 22r motor no matter what you do to it. It might run a little better, but it will most likely never be what you want it to be.

The toyota 3rd is relatively easy to regear.. It doesn't take shims in the carrier and is easier to adjust.. The magic is the pinion depth.
Regearing shouldn't run more than $400 or so, including the gears and the labor. Check around pirate 4x4.
If you're being charged $600 for a regear, you're getting screwed. If you're being charged $1200 for pulling the 3rd and regearing it, you're really getting screwed - for that kind of money I'll work on your rig myself. $1200 for a few hours labor and $300 in parts ain't a bad gig.
Check with the vendors on pirate..
