1994 3.0L V6 4x4 Automatic - Sucks Gas big time 10-15mpg #759919 10/22/06 10:38 PM

Hi all,

I am a new owner of a very nice and clean 1994 4x4, 3.0L V6 extended cab, long bed Automatic.

I have been trying, in vien, to figure out why I get simply pathectic milage. 10-12/city 15-16/Hwy. I am in Canada where gas cost $1/liter or $3.80 an gallon. So you can see I'd rather get a little more then 200-250 miles on a $70 tank of gas.

I have checked the O2 sensor and it reads rich but the ECU does not seem to do anything about it. Does that mean I need to replace the ECU? Is there some other sensor that is part of this curcuit of decisions about fuel mix? (I'm not a mechanic)

Thanks

Best regards,

Glenn Schentag

No, that's real bad mileage. I get 20 mpg with my 88 V6 4Runner and 23 mpg on the highway. If your O2 is reading rich then the computer is adding too much fuel. You need to find out why. I would guess there is a vacuum leak somewhere making the computer think it's running lean and therefore adding fuel. Check the intake rubber hose for any hidden cracks. Clean the throttle body really good. Check to see if the catalytic convertor is getting clogged or damaged. The automatic trans won't get as good of gas mileage as the 5 speed but you should be getting closer to 17-19 mpg.

Body Damage is Cool
Mine got about 12mpg city/16mpg hwy right off the showroom floor in 93 and did for 13 years. Best I've ever got was about 17mpg at high altitude (7000 ft).

Wow, I can't believe you guys get that bad of gas mileage. My first Toyota pickup was a 1990 standard cab deluxe 4x4 3.0 5 speed with factory 31" tires and I did the 2-1/4" cat-back on that truck too. I average 21 mpg and 24 on the highway with that truck. Maybe the exhaust makes that big of a difference, I know the factory pipes neck down to 1-3/4" or less in the bends.

The Auto is going to suck some mileage, but our 4Runner (94 3.0 5 speed) conistently got 17/20.
