It is acting like the dizzy is 180* out.

The first time I rebuilt my 2.6, I had the dizzy 180* out, but it would run. It'd idle ok, but it wouldn't have any power what so ever. I was even able to drive it, but it had no power, sounded like an old tractor, and the top speed was about 30mph after about a mile.

yes sir all the belts are on and in good shape. as far as I know the alt is in good running order, at least it was before i pulled the engine from the donor truck. there are some vacuum lines that arent connected yet untill I can get my hands on my friends book that tells me exactly where they go...a few are in place but Im just guessing as to where they go. as far as that everything else is hooked up and ready to go. it sounds like it is ready to roll, just a little more work!! thanks

Hey Doz, you can't expect that to run good without all the vacuum lines hooked up !! Do that first...

thanks for all the help guys!! I finally got it to start and it purrs like a kitten for the most part...only one question left (i hope) when it starts it revs at about 1500 Rpm for about 5 seconds before calming back down to idle. once at idle it sits for about another 5 seconds then dies altogether. what could be causing this?

thanks
Chris

Chris, ten seconds of running sounds kinda long for an alternator problem, but Richard's advice to check the alternator was good. Which alt did you use ? and are they the same ? You got the wire hooked up to the " L " terminal on the alt OK ?

What do the dash lights do when you start it ?

I guess you found the temp sensor you were looking for ?

I used the good one from the truck...both are the same. the battery is dead right now so I have been jumping it off my car to get it to start. I dont think its an alternator problem. and nope never found where that temp sensor goes.

thanks
Chris

Chris, you need a good battery before you can start to troubleshoot anything else.

You also need to have all the sensors hooked up...

Take an inspection mirror (or look at the bottom of the intake manifold from inside the fender well) and you should be able to see the sensor on the underside of the manifold. I think there are actually 2 sensors, one tells the computer the temp, the other runs the gauge.

I don't intend this in a mean way, but, you really need to have all 52 cards in the deck before you can play solitaire! You'll never win if you are missing just one card.

and you didn't tell me what the dash lights are doing when you start it...

Good Luck!
Jeff

Thanks for the help Jeff.... in no way is that a mean comment, its very true. I found both of those sensors up underneath the manifold but it wasnt untill I looked at another trooper and saw where there is a yellow wire with a black stripe on it that connects to a pin on the air intake side of the engine and that is actually what made my gauge start working. as far as everything else is concerned I put the battery back in and started it up last night and it worked just fine... all the lights in the instrument cluster all come on when the key is turned to acc and once its started all the lights go off except for the 02 light. when it was idleing rough a few days ago the check engine light would blink on for a second then go off but that doesnt happen anymore. so all lights work as they should. thanks for all the help!!

Chris

So, you are saying that it stays running OK now ?? Great!

The O2 sensor light is reset by reaching up under the dash, on the back of the speedo is a "slide switch" . Simply slide it to the other position, and you should be OK for another 90K miles. If you get on your back and slide under there, you might be able to see the switch, it should be black, and the speedo case is white. That light goes on based simply on mileage on the speedo. It doesn't have a thing to do with whether or not the O2 sensor is good or bad.
