The 3VZ-E does not have lifters. It has tappets. One adjusts the valve lash by changing shims on the tops of the tappets.

While this job is possible to do with just some basic tools. It is SIGNIFICANTLY easier is one has the correct tools.

Thanks Jack, well Im not sure if there is a thread on here with pics for adjusting valves, but if i do take it in to a shop, any ideas on what co$t I am looking at? (figuring I would also need a complete gasket kit too Right? i.e: Head, ex. manifold, intake, valve covers) I hope this answer doesnt scare me - Thanks

Did you ever figure out the ticking or ? Wondering if it was a valve, and how difficult it is. I called around and Im not happy with what people are saying about valve adjustment. Called 5 mechanics, 3 said they wouldnt do it, 1 told me to drive it til it blows, the other said around $2000.. Unbelievable. Its getting lounder and louder. What a real bummer. Anyone know any good Toy mechanics around Akron/Cleveland Ohio area? I think I may need a miracle.. I would kill me to sell my truck. Hail Mary.

For a valve adjustment??? That's insane.....
Valve lash is pretty easy to do yourself. I believe Roger has a pretty good writeup on it.

For a valve adjustment???

He's got a 3.0 V, NOT the sme as the 22R(E) adjustment. I know I don't have the skills to attempt it on a 3.0

OK is it possible that I have a valve sticking? I dont know if this means anything but when it is running and I remove the oil filler cap, it seems to be sucking air into the engine and RPMs lower. Any Ideas?

OK..dumb question..it is Supposed to suck air.. OK Just did the Seafoam treatment..and WOW after the smoke cleared it sure runs ALOT crisper..But...still the ticking.. Tonight im gonna put in some Lucas Oil treatment.. This is insane. OK IF I have an exhuast leak.. I can pull the plug wires one at a time right? And if I do, when I reach the leaking Exhuast cylinder it should stop right? Well..Im still tryin

Not sure about pulling the plug wires to diagnose an exhaust leak, but to answer your other question, yes, a ticking valve can really be that loud!! I had one that was about 3x the clearance it was supposed to be (my own dumb fault) and you could hear it coming down the street from about 100 yards

IM sure ill get it fixed $1000 or so later. Freekin pissin me off. Any other thoughts or ideas welcome..before I go insane
