After rebuilding my 22RE with Darin's help (alot of help) I put 500 trouble free miles and then performed an oil/filter change. I then put another 500 miles on the truck which brings us to today.

I went out and started the truck and noticed what sounded like a metal to metal slapping sound coming on at 2K rpms lasting until about 2.4k rpms then either getting masked by the engine/exhaust sound or it goes away. It isn't really that loud but it is noticable in and outside the cab.

I first pulled the valve cover and checked my new EB RV head for broken valve springs, possible valve seat issues, and also valve clearences (incase the valves were slapping the pistons). Everthing there was fine.

I then ran a compression test and the results turned out fine (165,165,171,166).

What it sounds like to me is like a forged piston engine in the AM. Sound to me like I may have some piston slap. This of course is my uneducated guess but I've distinctly heard this noise before...

The number 1 and 3 spark plugs looked really good with number 3 being a little more "sooty" and number 4 being a bit more "sootier" (is that even a word?) than number 3. The cap and rotor are a slight bit worn so I plan on replacing those tonight to see if the ignition may be causing this. The timing checked out perfectly at 5 dergrees jumpered.

Anyone have any ideas? I dont have a mechanics stethescope yet but it sure seems to be coming from number 4.

Thanks,
Jake
