Can't get my Pilot Bearing out!! #761791 10/31/06 01:04 AM

I can't get my pilot bearing out, i tried to fill the space behind it with grease then take a bolt that matched the diameter of the bearing and shove it in there but it didn't move at all. I tried that trick a few times and then the dust seal of the bearing popped off and grease just pushed threw the ball bearings. After that happened i took out the center of the bearing and the balls, so no i've got the outer ring of the bearing stuck in the crankshaft.. Any ideas as to how to get that damn thing out?

If that doesn't make sense here's a pic..

ugh.. i'm not too sure about those ideas but thanks, it seems the pilot bearing is recessed back into the crankshaft, is this true? when i put my finger in there it feels like the bearing race should be thicker. So I donÆt think I can jam a socket smaller than the bearing race and push it out with grease since there isnÆt much left of the bearing to push out.

I would like to heat the crankshaft and bearing race up with a torch, bad idea?

That's no fun at all.. I've never seen that happen.
You're going to need a bearing puller.
You might try it in association with using a aerosol can of compressed air - find it at the PC store, used for cleaning cases and keyboards. Turn it upside down, and get that bearing nice and cool. It should get cold faster than the crankshaft around it, which will make it easier to remove.

Would it be possible to use a screw driver and a hammer to get in there behind the outer bearing shell and pop it out that way ?, or is that a bad idea ?.

I've used wet newspaper and a dowel in the past to hydraulic that thing out of there.

Dremel is next.

I would not use a torch unless you plan on replacing your rear main seal. The best way is to use a dremal or air grinder with a carbide bur tip. grind it away till it is real thin in about three spots the drive a small chisel under the thin spots. it will start to shrink and you can work it out.

I used a cut off wheel on a small hobby type dremel tool (about the size of a quarter when it was new) and cut the race about 90% of the way through. Then harassed it with a chisel to finish breaking it and finally fish it out. It worked really well for me and took no time at all with no collateral damage either.

You cAN usually borrow a loaner pilot bearing puller from an auto parts store for free. I did this last week from autozone.
