Getting the Wheeling Fever

Help please ... Looking for any new ideas. I have a 94' 4x4 pickup with a frozen (rusted) Pitman arm. Soaked with rust penetrant lubricant, have tried a heavy duty Pitman puller, acetylene torch & a trusty "BFH" .... The sucker still won't budge.
Any of you guys have any better luck with this situation?
Thanks!, Dana

I do the above, usually putting on the puller and keep snugging it up every hour or so, leaving the pressure on. Also, try pushing down on the end of the pitman arm (pry bar or hammer) with the puller on it. If not re-using the arm, cutoff wheel to slit it on the back side, parallel to the splines.

Like Roger said, cut it off. That's what I had to do. I just kept gradually grinding a slit in it with a cutoff wheel in my grinder, untill I started to see a stress crack, and then I whacked it once with a hammer and it fell off.

Ahh, it's good to live in rust free Arizona!

Don't want to do more damage to the rest of the steering infrastructure (?!?) by continuing to pound on stuff. Heaven forbid you break the sector shaft. <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/ignore.gif" alt="" />

Good idea .... I'll get a small grinder with a cut-off wheel on that sucker. Living in salt-country has it's draw-backs, that's for sure!
Thanks for tip! .....

Cut mine off too. Seems the typical and fastest way to go about it.

rust belt guys: I have about every kind of penatrating oil made. some of it is even colored brown to make you think it is working. the ONLY one that I have found that actually works is called enforce, it is in a green can. my local napa carries it. on the steering arm I was trying to get off, I sprayed it on one side and with in 45 min it appeared on the other side. some firm taps and it came right off.

I'll have to remember to pick up a can of that stuff ... Never heard of it but sounds great. Once again, great tip! ... I ran a vertical line on the backside of the pitman arm with a series of .125" drilled holes & then cleaned them up with a small cut-off wheel. Then took a cold chisel to it & she opened right up! The pitman arm fell right off .... -Dana
