Getting the Wheeling Fever
91 trooper, 2.8, 5 speed. Does anyone have any suggestions for getting the detent balls out of the transfer case? I tried a magnet but it's not strong enough. I'm just getting frustrated now. Any help will be appreciated.

Are you taking the case apart anyway? When I was tearing my case apart, I didn't have a magnet thin enough to fit down into the holes. Since I was taking the shift rails out anyway, I just took them out first and then the detent balls could be pushed down and came out through the passages in which the rails sit.

no just replacing the balls, springs, and caps.

i have a shifting problem where it doesn't like to stay in gear. i'm hoping that this solves the problem but i don't think it will solve anything.

filled the holes with carb cleaner and blew them out with the air gun...should have thought of that earlier

didn't solve the problem...not to my surprise

Doing the TeraLow install, huh. I just did this last weekend. Same truck, year, and engine. My magnetic pickup tool could not lift the ball either. The magnet was not strong enough. However, I did go to HomeDepot and purchase a magnetic pickup with a neodymium magnet. VERY STRONG pull. Like this one:

When I came back to the wrenching party, my frustrated friends (couldn't get that *@%! ball out either) had my transmission ripped (Terry, you know who you are!!!! ) from my Trooper! The first time that I placed the small neodymium magnet pickup in the ball channel, it picked it right up!

Good luck!!
