The loud creaking and popping is the steering travel limiters. There is a mechanical stop on the spindle where it hits the cross member. They came stock with plastic caps but they don't last. Smear a small dab of grease on the flat stops. It really does make a difference. It took me four years to figure that one out. On the C/C, I can't help you.
