Getting the Wheeling Fever
Greetings all,
I have just recently purchased this 96 4x4 with the extra cab or what ever ya call it. this is mainly my work truck and I have started to find some weird things going on.
with the c/c engaged it will just shut off, loosing its pgm and all??? when making a sharp turn and say going over a bump I get this loud snapping or cracking sound like something twisting. I don't remember these things in my old nissan. and I have been in full size trucks since 1989,with no things like these.
If anyone has ideas ???.
Rich

The loud creaking and popping is the steering travel limiters. There is a mechanical stop on the spindle where it hits the cross member. They came stock with plastic caps but they don't last. Smear a small dab of grease on the flat stops. It really does make a difference. It took me four years to figure that one out. On the C/C, I can't help you.

The CC prob sounds like the "cancel" program is geting engaged. When you are making the moves described it may be the gas pedal cable is flexing (indicating you want to accelerate) the brake sensor is activated (you want to stop) or there is something going on in the steering wheel circuit related to the cancel button. Spend the time to do the FSM download and you can get all the electrical diagrams.

Does the CC shut off completely (light in dash goes out), or does it just disengage? Both the clutch and brake pedal switches could disengage it and a minor adjustment might fix it.

Need a Spot
Just a thought...When I first got my T100 the cruise control wasn't working at all. Doing my usual "new to me" vehicle inspection I noticed that the brake fluid was a tad low. I topped it off and...cruise control was back. Not a problem since then.

All,
the light stays on, I just have to re-engage it. sucks when you are on a nice power run up a 7% grade then wammm no c/c.
it does it whenever no rime or reason no turning or bumps. I have tried to see if I could link it to something like if I put a turn signal on or hit the brakes.... BUT it just does it in the middle of steady crusing?????

Check to see if you have any brake lights, or at least to see if the 'stop' fuse is blown. Without the brake signal, CC goes a little wonky too.

Inspect your vacuum lines.

The troubleshooting section for the CC in the FSM is pretty extensive, even for the older trucks.

On the subject matter of vacuum lines....At about 10 years a lot of the neoprene lines harden and crack, especially those close to hot engine parts. Here's an old trick - a PITA but it works. Pop off the lines one by one. Snip off a quarter inch or so and put the line back on. Doing so gets you into "new" hose softness and inner diameter. Look close for cracking when bending. If the lines show surface cracks, replace even if they are not leaking - they will.
