Are you running the 32" tires now with the stock 4.11 gears?

Reason I ask is I have stock 235/75 r15 tires and will be getting new shoes sometime soon and I'm either going with 31's or 32's. I plan on running 32's in the long run with 4.88's, but I'd like to know how bad the 32's would be with 4.11 gears on an all-stock 1990 v6 5 speed runner.

I don't have the $$$ to drop on tires and gears so I will have to get tires first cause mine are soooo crappy.

Its not too bad. She drives, but not anywhere quick. Just getting it rolling its the only time you have to ride the clutch a little bit. But really its not bad at all. I have had 33" tires with the 4.11's, but i really like the 33"x11.5 i got now.

Yea it wont even be a problem. Like i said i had 33" tires on my 90 toyota and its fine. But your not going anywhere too fast and going up hill is slow. But 31 should be fine. I went form the 33 to 32 and can tell a difference.

Just wondering... I have an '85 toyota with the factory 4.10 gears... I'm looking to go up to 4.88's as I run 31-33" tires... If I were to get some of the factory 4.88's (the whole 3rd member) can I get a rear 3rd member and swap it into the front with no modifications? Aren't the 3rd members the same between the front and rear on solid front axle vehicles? so basically I could get two of the factory rear 3rd members (with the 4.88's) and make them work very easily...?

Yes, front and rear 8" 3rds are the same. Since the factory 4.88s only came on the IFS trucks, you'll need 2 donor vehicles and pull the rear 3rds out of both to swap.

I had a guy tell me yesterday that you can't swap the 4.88 3rds into the 4 cylinder housings because the axle shaft diameters are different? I started to argue with him that a bunch of people have done it... he says that he tried and it won't work... because the 4.88 3rds came out of a v6 toyota, the axle shaft diameter is bigger, to accomodate the engine... So my questions to the gurus on this board (because I have faith in all of you) - Are the 3rds a straight swap? will my 4 cylinder axle shafts (4.10 factory gearing) work with the v6, 4.88 3rds? Nothing else needs swapping? Just the 3rds? By the way - these 3rds seem hard to find...

I swapped 5.29 v6 gears into a 2wd 8" housing with no issues with the axles. However, I had to clearance the housing a bit though. The v6 gears are thicker than the standard 4cyl, so just grinding the notch in the lower part of the housing wider made it work for me.
Since then, the 3rd has been put into a housing from 86-up (don't know the actual year) with no problems with the axles. The only time you have to worry about it is if you have a 7.5" ring gear. But that would be a 2wd truck anyway.
