Getting the Wheeling Fever
Hi, just want to check if anyone knows how much friction there should be with wiper linkage with the wiper motor removed. My wiper motor gave up the ghost appears to have a short between pins 1 and 3.(It pops a 2.5 amp breaker on my 12 volt power supply.) My wipers died on the way home and I am wondering if the wiper friction took the wiper motor out. I can barely get the wipers moving by hand. Is that normal? Seems like a lot of friction to over come for such a small motor. I have one on order, but before I replace it I want to make sure the linkage is not frozen. Thanks

I would say the wiper assembly. My wipers on my 89 lwb are going out and I'm first going to take it apart and try to clean and re grease the linkage and clean the motors and see if that does anything.

When you pull your wiper motor, can you check how much force it takes to move the wipers. I am going to relub my wiper linkage today to see if that helps. I can not find a spec in the 91 manual for wipers. I will post if I see a big difference in wipers after relub.

Someone else posted how seized their wiper linkage got on a Gen 1 Montero as well. I can't remember who listed it, but it was just this year or late last year. Anyway, the linkage needs to be really free, easy to work by hand with the motor removed from the linkage. Get yours freed up, or get new linkage if you can't get the rust and crud out of the pivoting areas.

Just got back from travel. I had a chance to pull out the wiper linkage and lube/clean everything. Yes the pivot on the passenger was rusted almost stuck.(Maintenance tip, lube your wipers at least once a year!) I was able to free everything up. Got my new motor in, but I am trying to figure out how to resync the blade position to the stopping position of the motor. I marked the back of the motor mounting bracket when I pulled the linkage apart, but it appears that the mark was off because the original motor was not in the right position when I pulled the lnkage. So how do you determine what position to mount the linkage to the wiper motor?

Wire up the motor, run it thru some cycles, turn them off ( should "Park") then hook up linkage to have arms in origional position. Cycle once to confirm correct wiper sweep, button up.

The problem is the linkage to the wiper motor can be placed anywhere in 360 degree from the next linkage. The wiper motor only spins in one continuous circle. So where you mount that linkage to the wiper motor must be optimized to stop the wiper in the proper position. It is a pain in the to keep mounting an unmounting the plate that holds the wiper motor and removing the linkage to the motor. You can also place the linkage in a position that jams the linkage that will destroy the motor. I have not done that yet, but it is possible. Any got a picture of the correct position?
