Thanks for the link. I did think it was strange that gear oil came out of the flange when I removed the driveshaft as I don't remember that happening when I replaced the clutch.
I've never replaced/removed the third member so I don't know exactly how things go together. I assume tightening that 30mm nut isn't going to remove the play from turning the flange, will it?

Tightening the nut may help if it is is just some excess play, but if the play is due to a worn bearing, then it won't help. I used to have to tighten my old rear pinion flange every 6 months or so.

That was easy enough to remove. Once the flange is removed the shaft is quite loose. I'd suspect the rear end is shot but I don't know how loose the shaft is supposed to be if at all.

I tightened the nut and it did tighten the flange a bit. I took it for a test drive and it may be a little better but the vibration is certainly not gone.
The thing that perplexes me is that it does not happen if the clutch is depressed whether the truck is in neutral or not. The fact that the clutch has an effect has me wondering.
Oh, well, now that I'm convinced it not the u-joints I'll just drive it until it breaks.

Well, I would definitely need some help diagnosing what is broken. From what I can see, whatever is broken is internal to the third member. If I've got to take that off/apart I might as well replace it all. At least, that's my thinking.
I was doing some searches here and haven't been able to find anything about diagnosing a bad third member. Any direction somebody can point me would be very helpful.

Well if there is play in the pinion and the nut isn't loose then its a good bet that the bearing is toast. Now if you haven't driven too much on it like this the gears may be salvageable. If you pooch the gears then your deffinately looking at a new pumpkin and probably soon with all that play.
What kind of gears are you running now? What kind to tires and what tires do you want to run? If your looking for better tire to gear ration with bigger tires then maybe this is an opertunity to upgradem, andof course add a locker.

There's play in the pinion with the nut tight and the pinion is very, very loose with the flange off.
I'm running near stock size tires (235x70x15) and stock gears. This is a daily driver truck and I have no plans to turn it into a rock crawler. It did have 31x10.5x15's on it when I bought it. It had those on it for 20k miles or more so I'm sure that didn't help the truck any.
How do I determine if it's only the pinion bearing that's bad? How do I replace the pinion bearing?
