 dash brake light issue

I have a problem with my dash brake light coming on. It doesn't happen continuously, but it is on most of the time. When I put the e-brake on, the light gets brighter, when I take it off, the lights dims but doesn't go out completely. First thing in the morning the light sometimes will go off, but comes back on after some driving. I have replaced the master cylinder already and that didn't change anything. Any ideas would be appreciated.
91 SR5 Xtra Cab, 298000km, 4" lift, 56" rear springs, 33-12.5R15 BFG Mud-Terran T/A KM2.....and an '85 axle still waiting to go in.

Check the fluid level in the MC... Check the wiring to the cap... Check to ensure the park brake switch is working...
If all else fails, replace the float sensor in the MC.

Thanks. Fluid level is fine, and I think the parking brake is ok, since it does seem to go on and off with the brake (or brighter/dimmer if the light is already on). I will try to check out the wiring.

Check your charging system when the engine is hot and all accessories on, Toyota has a thing about them brake lights and sometimes the charge light will be on with it but not always. Mind about drove me crazy replacing brake parts and ended up being alternator. Not saying that is your problem but worth a check anyway!!

more than likely, it is your alternator starting to go out...

Thanks for the input guys. I checked the voltage with engine on, heater, headlights, etc on, and it read about 13.25v. With accessories off, it read about 13.75v. What should the running voltage be? Also, I checked it at the battery terminals, should it be checked right at the alternator?

more than likely, it is your alternator starting to go out...
Ken The only thing stopping me from changing it right now is this problem has been ongoing for a long time. Is it possible the alt. is just below the level needed to keep that light off, but still functioning fine?

first it shouldn't matter where you take the reading at if everything is working right but what's getting to the battery is the most important of all. 13.8 volts is the chosen ideal reading but should be between 13.5-14.5 volts loaded at 2500 RPMs at operating temp!!

Thanks for the info. I think I will pull the alternator and replace the brushes and see where that gets me. This was my first time posting a problem and its great to see all the help that's available. Thanks alot.
