Dean,
engnbldr and those that know there stuff have directed me to to use petroleum jelly (vaseline). The guy at the parts counter at Miller Toyota said that was hooey. I would go with EB's advice.

I like the bacon grease option.

The consensus here is that it is not necessary. once the engine starts it will prime it self. In my case we have flow just not much.

I disagree with the consensus and I've built a few motors.
I've regularly seen them refuse to prime on a complete rebuild (vatted, machined, properly cleaned). Pulling the plugs and turning them over will generate more than 250 RPM. IF they're not priming at 250 RPM, you don't want to run them dry at idle speed or above.

I pack them with grease, but that's what I've got available.

Body Damage is Cool
the way i see it, with how much assembly lube i use on the engines that i build, it could run quite a while without oil before causing damage. all the 22Rs i've put together cranked and cranked with no plugs and i could never get the light to go out, but as soon as i put the plugs in and got it to pop, it would go out. this is with the oil pump primed as well.

just about the same thing happens when it sits as well, especially if you use a lesser quality filter. assembly lube is stickier than motor oil, so it can't be too much worse than a regular dry start.

And I pack the gears only? Or do I also pack the relief valve and channels?

I prefer filling the entire chamber but not sure it's necessary!!

As I recall (I'm at Home Depot fetching the Vasaline) there are three, what could be called, chambers: One holds the drive gear and driven gear (impellers), one holds the pressure relief valve, and a third is a crescent about 2 1/2" long and less than 1/8" wide with a small hole either in it or just below it, what I am calling flow chambers.

Is all this packed? Or will it hurt to pack them regardless. I'm just afrid of clogging the non-moving channels with the vsaline.
