Getting the Wheeling Fever
I went up north last week to pick up my wife and the roads were icy on and off, so... I engaged and dissingaged 4wd Hi - while driving @ 100kph. there were no noises or grinding when engaging or dissengaging at that time and the 4wd was working.
Today I tried to engage it while driving at about 30 - 50kph and it just made the worst grinding noises I ever heard. I had to stop for it to engage. Did I wreck something when engaging at highway speed? It never did this before. I know I need to stop for 4wd low but wasn't aware of 4hi. I had posted in the summer about a vibration at higher speeds when the hubs were locked and found the cv boot on the pass side was split and it only vibrated with the pass side hub locked (problem found?) could the vibration have caused something? Anyway... do you 4wd gurus have any ideas? Of course you do, that's why I post here

im assuming you have manual hubs, and that they were locked?
grinding means your front drive isnt turning the same speed as the transfer case. like when going around corners, or when the hubs aren't locked.

duhh...rookie mistake. Hubs weren't locked
But I will need to put on some new cv axle boot(s). Driver side is cracking a little now.
Anyone know how to keep the cv joint from needing replacement if the boot is cut in two? I don't have a garage to work in and money is shot for now too with my wife being off work and paying for medical costs (accident).

Presuming the boot hasn't been split for awhile and has spun all the grease out and had gravel tossed up in there, you might be able to get away with packing some grease in there and getting a split boot kit from NAPA or the like. With our cold up here, I kind of doubt the adhesive would work at -50F in a sharp turn, but you guys down there might be able to use it for an interim fix. Just keep an eye on it.

BORROW someone's garage, so you can clean it up right and give the adhesive a chance to cure up. Speak up man!

I think Neo and another guy over in the Mitsu bbs live in your town.

The CV joint should be fine if you keep it packed with grease and it hasn't been too long, but get that boot replaced pronto!
